Working in Fashion: Kate the Stylist from Boohoo.com

So you want to work in fashion, eh? Trust me when I say that it’s never as glamorous as it looks or sounds. But underneath all the hard work, which can often be compared to slavery, it can be sooo much fun. Which is why I always love to share the wise words and insights from fashionistas on the front line and here we have Kate Holroyd, a stylist from Boohoo.com.

This is the second of my Working In Fashion blog series and I am thrilled to be interviewing Boohoo’s lovely Kate.

Kate Holroyd, Fashion Stylist @ Boohoo.com

Look inside the world of Kate, a fashion stylist at one of the most popular online fashion retailers in the UK. Boohoo.com is based in Manchester and flies the flag for fashion businesses in the North. Here’s what she had to say about her exciting role!

Q1. What do you love most about your job?

I love the people that I get to work with everyday. I love to go on the creative shoots, always a really good opportunity. And I love all the clothes I get to create outfits with and to see the upcoming trends coming through to shoot! Everyday is exciting here at Boohoo!

Q2. So describe to me a typical day…

Normally, I find out which model I have for the day and then I pull a rail of clothes that have come through to shoot. It’s my job to select the type of clothes that will best suit my model! First I’ll look for a bit of inspiration or research before I start prepping my selection then I create outfits for each piece from the styling rail, which is a collection of clothes from basic t-shirts to jackets and jeans etc, (everything that you need to make a great outfit basically).

The models and MUAs will arrive at 10am so I will need to have a hair and make up reference to give to the make up artist by this time, and at 11am, we’ll be ready to start shooting! We usually shoot up to 45 different outfits every day, all in which include a catwalk of that outfit. On each outfit I will add accessories if needed such as jewellery, belts or a bags, sometimes a hat or a feature piece that makes something like a plain garment look a bit more interesting.

Q3. Who is your biggest source of style inspiration?

I’m loving Cara Delevinge at the moment, not just for her style but for her overall look. For the shoots we do there will often be a Cara Delevinge hair and make up reference on the mood board! I think she is amazing – not only does she look flawless on the catwalk and shoots, but she has such a natural and fun style.

Q4. Tell me your biggest fashion faux pas (come on, we all have them)…

Haha, I used to wear loads of sparkly glitter leggings and that’s all I would wear. I think it drove my mum mad and she was quite pleased when I got bored of them! However I probably moved onto something just as bad!

Q5. Any insider style tips for 2013?

A staple jacket is a must – varsity jackets, embellished, quilted, oversized! Invest in some big, embellished necklaces. Forget the skyscraper heels and go for the low heel and I promise you won’t regret it – try them in a bright colour or white, team with a pair of boyfriend fit jeans or a mono inspired outfit. Be confident and try bold colours and bold patterns. These are just some of the key things for 2013 and also you must remember to check out our Boohoo Boutique collection!
