London Fashion Week SS17 // Peter Jensen Presentation
“I love gardening, always have,” said Peter Jensen about his collection. There’s nothing metaphorical about this collection then. Inspired mostly by Lady Rhoda Birley, a glamorous Irish beauty known (but not known to many) for her eccentric sense of fashion, Peter Jensen’s SS17 concept brings together the practical with the sensational. Note the ready-to-wear shirt come dresses, the comfortable cuts and oversized jackets, the eccentric patterns and the floral suggestions, and of course the printed scarves that defined Lady Birley’s look.
But it’s not just Lady Birley’s wild wardrobe that inspires Jensen’s story for Spring / Summer. It’s also her passion for gardening, something he can personally relate to. I’m not sure whether Jensen is mad enough to play butler to his flower beds, but it’s rumoured that Lady Birley cared for her roses so much that she slaved away in the kitchen cooking Lobster Thermidor to feed to her plants. Perhaps the hidden metaphor in this is that Jensen is just as cuckoo as Birley. But either way, don’t you just love the hats and the gingham?
